<image:caption>Are you ready to create positive change in your life? Are you ready to bloom more fully into you? Human beings are social creatures. We progress towards our dreams and desires with greater ease when being held in a loving, compassionate and fun circle of support and accountability. The Women’s Leadership Circle! is a safe space for women to come together and mindfully explore what we would like to create in our lives. We gather in a relaxed and intimate way to dream deeply our desired future and to take conscious steps into living our intentions now. Some of the practices we use are mindfulness meditation, journaling, speaking and listening from the heart, working with moon cycles, gratitude, visioning, intention and accountability. If you are interested in connecting more deeply with yourself, one another, and the sacred… If you desire to become a conscious creator of a life you love, then this circle is for you! Working in sisterhood is powerful! Let the miracles begin to unfurl… Join a circle…</image:caption>

<image:caption>Step into your Sovereign Self while expressing all of you through the art and practice of writing. Journaling is a profound tool for expressing and discovering ourselves. In this workshop series we explore journaling styles and techniques, spend time together writing, and sharing. Journaling can help us to understand what we think and feel from new perspectives. Instead of having thoughts and feelings bottled up inside, they can unwind and transform on the page. While inviting in and witnessing all of us, we find the narrative thread of our wise self, our Sovereign Self, to guide us. Start your journey…</image:caption>

<image:caption>Yoga is a movement practice that embraces mindfulness, breath awareness, and embodiment, while strengthening and gently stretching the body. Council is the practice of taking your seat in the circle and speaking and listening from the heart. Presence is the practice of council. Listening with our whole bodies. Even if what is being spoken is the richness of silence. In this class we begin with yoga and finish with a brief talking circle. Step into sacred embodied practice and compassionate witnessing of self and community. Contact me to learn more…</image:caption>

<image:caption>In my therapy office you will find a warm, inviting, relaxed atmosphere. Together we create safety, spaciousness and grounding. A little bit at a time, we invite in what needs healing. We do this through talking, by being aware of body sensations, and by becoming present to emotions that arise - and allowing them to be digested. At times we could also bring in movement, body posture and breath awareness, expression through art, and personal declarations of intent. Book a session…</image:caption>

<image:title>Joyful Body, Joyful Life - Polyvagal Theory - The polyvagal theory explains that as human beings we have three distinct nervous system states that support different types of behaviour.</image:title>
<image:caption>When a person feels safe enough, ventral vagal neural circuitry supports social engagement, and is part of our parasympathetic nervous system. When a person feels threatened, our sympathetic nervous system mobilizes us to flee or fight. This is our first line of defense. When a person feels overwhelmed by threat, dorsal vagal neural circuitry moves us into freeze/shut down. This is our second line of defense, and is part of our parasympathetic nervous system.</image:caption>

<image:title>Joyful Body, Joyful Life - Polyvagal Theory - The Vagus Nerve</image:title>
<image:caption>The vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve, and the longest and most complex nerve in your body. The word vagus comes from the Latin vagare, meaning to wander. So the vagus nerve is known as the wandering nerve. And wander it does! From the brain to the face, ears, larynx, heart, lungs, and guts. The vagus nerve plays a crucial role in determining our psychological, emotional and physical wellbeing. A lack of proper functioning in the vagus nerve can lead to myriad symptoms including anxiety, depression, migraines, and irritable bowel syndrome. As your therapist, I will help you learn to regulate your vagus nerve and retune your nervous system in order to heal from trauma, initiate deep relaxation, and improve sleep and digestion. <image:title>Joyful Body, Joyful Life - Polyvagal Theory - Ventral Vagal As a human being, the ventral vagal system is where we want to spend the vast majority of our time. This is our social engagement system, and we are wired to be social creatures. Here we feel safe to rest in connection, enjoy novelty, and to be present, open and curious. In the ventral vagal state we have access to our higher cortical functioning, the evolutionary newer parts of our brain. Another way to say this is that all of our intelligence is online. In this state we can accurately read cues in our environment. This is also a highly restorative state for the body: stress hormones and inflammation are reduced.</image:title>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6010955bc5302b62f9b7a177/1615840434834-1SFQHOU12XOW09PBZH9Y/unsplash-image-7nKv6HMsNEc.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Joyful Body, Joyful Life - Polyvagal Theory - Mobilization: Fight/Flight</image:title>
<image:caption>Our survival system works hard to keep us safe, and has helped our species to survive for hundreds of thousands years. When our nervous system moves into sympathetic arousal adrenaline and cortisol are released, our heart rate and breathing increases, and blood moves to our legs and arms. We are ready to run or fight. But what if it’s not a tiger that elicits this intense response, but rather your bosses facial expression, or your friend’s tone of voice? Then you have all these stress chemicals running through your body, your digestion has shut down, and the evolutionary newer part of your brain has shut off! This is why it is so important for us to do our trauma healing, and to learn to modulate our stress responses. Book a session…</image:caption>

<image:title>Joyful Body, Joyful Life - Polyvagal Theory - Dorsal Vagal If there is no chance of running or fighting the tiger, we move into our dorsal vagal system. Basically we collapse and play dead, give up, go into shock. There are some survival advantages to this. We move into an energy preservation state, and blood moves from our periphery to our core. This decreases our chance of bleeding to death. Our pain and fear tolerance increases as we become detached from an unbearable situation. But what happens when what was unbearable for you as a child triggers this nervous state response in you as an adult? This is why it is so crucial for us to heal our trauma. We can become free from the prison of the past.</image:title>

<image:title>Joyful Body, Joyful Life - Polyvagal Theory - ‘Safety is the Cure’</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Stephen Porges coined the term neuroception to describe how our neural circuits distinguish whether situations and people are safe or dangerous. These responses are not voluntary. On a neurobiological level our nervous system is picking up information in the environment and evaluating that information on a subconscious level. Depending on our nervous system state, trauma history and attachment style, we interpret this environmental stimuli through our own lens. In ‘safe’ feeling states we can access higher cortical function, and greater diversity of expression. In ‘dangerous’ states those systems turn off and we are defensive. <image:title>Joyful Body, Joyful Life! - Attachment Theory - Attachment theory studies our biological drive to connect with other human beings.</image:title>
<image:caption>When we are born we are reliant on the care of our parents or caregivers to survive. If we receive reliable nurture, attunement and care from the adults in our life, we develop a secure state of mind. Our internal working model becomes one of trust and security. As we grow and begin to explore the world, caregivers are experienced as a safe haven, a secure base to explore life from. Secure attachment gives the child the experience of feeling safe, protected, loved, and accurately reflected.</image:caption>

<image:title>Joyful Body, Joyful Life! - Attachment Theory - Insecure Attachment Styles</image:title>
<image:caption>Our insecure attachment style is not who we are, but rather developed as a strategy to minimize the hurt of not being met optimally by our primary caregivers. There are three distinct insecure attachment styles: Anxious Ambivalent- Also known as ‘preoccupied.’ A highly activated attachment system. Right brain dominant, more emotional. Seeks closeness & intimacy. Fear of being abandoned. Worried you are a burden. Anxious Avoidant- Also known as ‘dismissive.’ A de-activated attachment system. Left brain dominant, less emotional. Independent, intimacy averse. Fear of being trapped and intruded upon. Worried you will be blamed. Disorganized- No organized strategy. Results when frightening or abusive parental behavior places child in an irresolvable conflict: the desire to move toward the caregiver and flee from the source of fear, when they're one and the same person.</image:caption>

<image:title>Joyful Body, Joyful Life! - Attachment Theory - ‘Earned Secure’ Attachment</image:title>
<image:caption>No matter what your current attachment style is, you can move towards a more secure state of mind. Neuroplasticity refers to the ability of neural networks in the brain to change with new experiences. The brain continues to remodel itself in response to experience throughout our lives, and our emerging understanding of neuroplasticity is showing us how relationships can stimulate neuronal activation and even remove the synaptic legacy of early social experience. This is where therapy comes in. Corrective experiences rewire the brain. It is possible to create a secure state of mind as an adult, even in the face of a difficult childhood. Whether you are currently more anxious about relationships, or avoidant of intimacy, I have the training and skills to guide you to update and heal your early relational imprints. I will support you in moving into a more secure attachment style so that you can meet the world feeling more safe, secure, and connected. Book a session…</image:caption>

<image:title>Joyful Body, Joyful Life! - Attachment Theory - Attachment Bonds Throughout the Lifespan</image:title>
<image:caption>The need for connection is our first and most basic instinct. And it doesn’t end as our period of dependency as children ends. We form enduring emotional bonds throughout our lifespan. Romantic love is an attachment bond, as are close friendships. These trusted relationships buffer us from stress and make us stronger in the face of life’s challenges, as well as supporting us to be physiologically healthier and more resilient!</image:caption>
